THE COTTAGE GARDEN IS GREAT!

Cottage gardens are my favorite garden style and the one I feel most at home in and most like myself in. They are casual, laid-back gardens, with surprises around every corner and hidden beauty everywhere. They multitask well, grow vegetables and herbs and flowers, and are down to earth in the best possible way. And They may seem chaotic, but they have a structure underneath that stands the test of time. They embrace nature’s gifts and celebrate color, texture, and abundance. They provide for our most basic food needs and our thirst for beauty. Finally, They are places you love to “be.” A cottage garden is a space that feels good, in a natural and charismatic way, touched by nostalgia and romance.

The cottage gardens also have a history. Originally from England, they arose from the need of small farmers to provide food for their families and medicinal herbs, and yet they still evoke the beauty of the land. They recognized that one was not enough without the other. They often had to do all of this in a small space, sometimes in the front of the cabin, not hidden off-site. The settlers brought this garden style with them, along with many heirloom plants, and the American cottage garden was born.

Recently, country house gardens have become central to the way we live. With trends towards sustainable living, organic food, and a simpler life, they once again provide us with everything we need in a garden. Cottage gardens are simply great… Here are the essential guidelines for creating your cottage garden, and of course, what are uninspired policies?

How to do things in the cottage garden

Cabin gardens rely on what lies beneath to structure chaos. Install simple paths, fences or walls, edges, and simple pergolas. This is what makes a cottage garden strong.

Use natural materials whenever possible. This was an example of when tradition called for using what you had in the garden. Garden gates were expected to be created from twigs and branches, logs used to build pergolas, and stones excavated from the garden beds that lined the paths. The crushed gravel made pavement friendly, and an old-fashioned cedar picket fence the perfect accessory.

Use your home garden to mix plants, vegetables, and herbs freely, but it’s okay to keep some of the basic design rules in mind—plant in groups of 3 or more, not individual plants. Repeat at least one color throughout the garden to achieve unity. Vary the heights and texture. However, there are no straight lines in this garden! That said, a cottage garden is very forgiving. Use some of the heritage plants of yesteryear. Cottage gardens are most effective with the element of nostalgia. Malvasvasias, lilacs, hydrangeas, English roses, climbing clematis, daffodils, poppies, herbs, foxgloves, roses, peonies, cosmos, conifer flowers, comes, and alders are all traditional elements. Remember, you can use edibles in this garden too. Leafy greens do well in the shade of larger flowering plants, and I find the patio varieties of summer squash to be a nice touch of texture. Runner beans can share the arbor with climbing roses. Do you have room for a dwarf fruit tree? Imagine blooming in the spring surrounded by bulbs, and then the taste of fresh apple pie later that year… These are the gifts that a cottage garden brings.
